Handel on Hunger Community Sing

The annual Sing-In of Handel's Messiah to benefit the Food Bank of Western New York was held on Monday, August 20, 2007 at 7:30 PM at Cheektowaga Central High School, 3600 Union Road, Cheektowaga, NY. The Cheektowaga Community Chorus sponsored the event. A freewill donation to benefit the Food Bank of WNY was collected. Choral singers, instrumentalists, and lovers of Handel's Messiah were invited to come to sing, play or listen.

"Handel on Hunger"  originated in Pinehurst, North Carolina in 1999 and was supported there for many years.  Several years ago the  Cheektowaga Community Chorus brought the concept to WNY. The  2006 event raised  $500.

"He Shall Feed His Flock" is a favorite arias from Messiah and was the inspiration to use the event to benefit the Food Bank of WNY. Cheektowaga resident Terry Romance was featured in two bass arias. Other vocalists were Jill Masters, soprano; Barbara Cooper, mezzo-soprano; and Edson Gifford III, tenor. The members of the audience were invited to sing the choruses accompanied by the orchestra.

Expenses of the program were underwritten by a grant from the Arts Council in Buffalo and Erie County, contributions by the performers, and funds from the Cheektowaga Community Chorus as a gift to the community.
