Ludwig van Beethoven. A facet of Beethoven's greatness was the translation of idealism into music with daring musical innovation depicting struggle and exaltive beauty. His favorite instrument, the piano, was the inspiration for his profound collection of Thirty-Two Piano Sonatas. They divide into three groups that follow the course of his deafness and consequent stylistic changes: first, the classical style reflecting Mozart and Haydn; the second showed drama and maturity; the last were of rare beauty and spiritual awareness.

[Gilbert and Sullivan Archive]These men collaborated to write the most popular operettas in the history of the English theater. Their works included satires on Victorian behavior and the British Empire. Gilbert, with a sharp and biting wit, wrote the lyrics. His humorous ballads provided material for several operettas. Sullivan had a sensitive nature and composed the clear and dramatic musical scores. Born in London, he also composed the music for the Hymn, "Onward, Christian Soldiers" (1871) and the song, "The Last Chord" (1877).

The Mozart ProjectThe strength of Mozart's genius made him the most universal composer the Western world has known. His was an independence of musical thought expressed in melodies of exceptional beauty and lilting rhythms. Mozart's operas, symphonies and string quartets contain a dramatic and emotional appeal and demonstrate his gift for melodic flow.
